We have been steady, not breaking any records but good. Ollie keep on it, you are doing all the right things. I’ve been following you and your shop looks like you can get thru this. Good luck.

Like many who have offered there advice, the seminar was an eye opener. But the hard sell afterwards was awfull. Be care-full of all these so called specialists. I think reading and updating your own skill set is the least costly. I have said to many of these gurus I will pay you after the results. And they all balk. I cannot get paid for a no start untill the vehicle starts and runs, right. So thats my challenge. Be wary my friend. However there is sound advise on this site. Heard GREAT things about Tom Hams work, plus it is affordable.

All of these posted books are great. I also like Dan Kennedy’s work
the No B/S series. Keeping reading and learning. But do the hardest thing Implement something new.

Lenny,
All of us shop owners have lived thru such a problem. I suffered thru 22 year relationship with an employee, who later left to become a teacher and free me from all the guilt and frustration of dealing with him. The doctors took out 14 inches of my intestines because I would not confront the problems. I think the its easier to tell someone what to do than doing it. I think Tom has some great points to follow, though the type of business you do makes it more difficult. Follow your gut, that’s usually the right answer. Good luck.

First off, I did not explain this would fix any problem. I did explain that I would have to start by getting the vehicles operating temperature to a normal and documented temperature. To start. Then I would have to go thru the next steps of diagnostics. When I finished with the t-stat repair, I did I drive cycle to see if the original code po420 reoccurred. Which it did not. Therefore I returned the vehicle to the customer and explained that I would like them to drive it and see if the fault or condition reoccurs. My crystal ball is out for repair and did not want to guess at cats? Though that was explained to the customer. I can figure out plenty of ways to screw up a process, I am looking for productive ways to fix my process.
Thanks!

Thanks to all that replied,
I like the idea of using Tests instead of diagnostics. I will try to use this and see what happens.
Tom interesting thought on attraction of customers, would like to hear more about this and what ways to find what customers we want to attract.

My expectations are much better than last year. I finished best $ year in the 22 years in business. I figure that’s good in this economy. I look to tighten things up, hold people more accountable and step back to an owners position. I have some new people and I am no longer afraid someone will leave. Look to market to more of the right customers.
Good luck Everyone, may God bless all with abundance.

Brian,
Thanks for your input. I am going to be dealing with opting out of my agreement if I can. However what about Mitchel’s program. I have been using the program for over five years and was never told about it…
-
Brian,
What’s the skinny. Are you for E-auto club or what? Does Mitchell have anything to do with them?
-
Wow,
It took a long time for anyone to offer up anything on this post. I feel maybe a little confused, my impression of E-auto club was that is was an authorized partner if you will of Mitchell1. The statement of not being part of Mitchell did take place, however it was never openly discussed why, also I had no choice because like so many suppliers to us independents I was locked in. Now I feel like I was buffalod into buying into another scammer of a program. To date the people I have had contact with do not seem to know who’s on first.
I will tell you that we did work with Mechanic net- who knew what was going on and did not lock you in for a year. I feel like I should have stayed with them. But I was looking for something that set us apart, graphics from mechanic net, made us look like a A/C Delco dealer. Seemed to confuse my customers.
I hate to say this but this happens to many times in our industry. I like to share a story for all the companies out there who want to sell us whether of not it is business advise and or programs like this. Most of us shop owners where flat rate technicians, we only got paid after we fixed something or when delivered on our expertise. I like to see someone step up to the plate!
I would like to know if there is a way out of this?

I too have just blown out a so called everything tech, have plenty of work cannot find anyone to work? They want to start at $20.00 an hour but can only bill 35 hrs. do the math it doesn’t work.
What gives?
I am thinking of becoming a training shop, high school kids at $12.00 per hour and me babysitting and teaching our craft
