We have a traveling programmer in our area . He comes to our shop . He can do American , Asian , and European . The charge is $160 . We just double it to $320 to the customer .

How often do you do brake fluid flushes ?
-
Steve , you may be on to something . You said selling flushes off an oil change will lose you alot of customers . Does anyone agree with him ? Do you not sell flushes on just an oil change ? Do you do just a safety inspection on oil changes ? If the customer is waiting do you use a different process so they can be on their way quickly ?

I am in NJ . We have been with repair pal for about 1 year . So far , it is a waste of money . You get a few poor leads once in a while …….. thats it .

Why do you only use one portion of the bolt on and use repair shop solutions for the other ? why not use bolt on for both ???

MemberJuly 21, 2016 at 7:00 pm in reply to: I can buy the parts online alot cheaper !!!!!!!! Thoughts ?I thought it was a small minority too Tom . But , I am in a town where the average income is 135k a year . Sometimes I feel the people with good income are the worst to deal with because even though they make top dollar at their job these types of people often have a bad habit of spending everything they have ……. million dollar homes , 100k cars , and then they cannot spend properly on necessities .

Town will not allow the led stuff …………. very difficult to deal with . Too many codes written in the town laws .

Hi . I have had my shop for 21 years . I have been using flat rate for about 4 years . It is a real pain in my opinion . It only works if you have a very top qualty A level tech who is VERY efficient and Very knowledgeable along with a strong car count . Trying to do flat rate with B or C level techs has not been a very good experience for us .

$40 for $50 deal ……. what does that mean ???

If he will not work off commission he is not a keeper , he just wants to be comfortable and not work hard for his pay . The fact that he will not work on commission tells me he has doubt’s about his own ability . Jeff

Sceduling is very tough for me . I have had my shop for 21 years and we have never scheduled vehicles . It has always been first come first serve . I have attempted to try scheduling numerous times but have gotten push back . People are so used to getting what they want when they want it these days…………… I do not want to risk having a customer go elsewhere . There are so many choices out there now and everyone has gotten much more aggressive with pricing . Dealers , Chain stores , and independents . Up here in the northeast all chain stores are now open on Saturday and Sunday along with AAA company owned shops . Its very difficult right now and I feel you need to take the job as soon as possible or risk losing it . There is very little loyalty anymore even if you give alot of value and treat the cliet like family . I have also found many people dislike the multi point inspection !! They just think you are like the dealer and want to run up a large bill . Just my opinion . Jeff

Yelp is a scam period . Yelp lets any and all bad reviews to post while they do not allow most good reviews to get posted . I called them and they say that Yelp sees negative reviews as more beneficial to the general public .

I have been in the auto repair industry for nearly 30 years . In recent years I am not a fan of Alldata labor times at all . For the most part I think it cheats the average technician . Dealer techs can beat the clock but only because they work on the same makes and models all day .
-
I would not be able to run my shop with a staggered labor rate . Not without replacing my techs . I have 2 A level techs on flat rate at $31.50 an hour . I do not see how I can currently compete with the dealers either

Would anyone like to share a mileage based maintenance schedule for EURO vehicles ?

What criteria do you use ? Top spenders ? How many times they have been in ?

Hi , how about some shop owners opinions of where these shop numbers should be ?

This site is the best I have seen . Tom Ham ….. a big ” hats off to you ” . Your insight has been very valuable to me and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it . I have been running my independent auto repair shop in N.J. for 21 years , and I ran my dads Sunoco station for 9 years prior to going to my own shop . I never took the ” easy road ” I did not seek assistance from training sources such as ATI etc . I did it my way , my own thoughts ,theories , and experiences . It has been a long difficult road but I would not give it up for anything in the world . There are many knowledgeable people on this site always willing to help and give advice . I just wanted to say thank you to each and every one of you . We all need to stick together and help one another when we can . We are under siege by , dealerships , chain stores , AAA mid atlantic is now playing some very serious games with independent shops across the U.S. Sorry about the long winded post but all of you are a very special part of our industry that I am very proud to be a part of . Thank you to all members here !!!!!!!

I had a 2008 Acura mdx in today with 100k on it . The only fluid listed in the owners manual in the glovebox is changing the differential fluid . Nothing else .

Hi Dave . I did try an email newsletter for 3 years . The opening rate was terrible . I truly think people are getting tired of all the e mail piling up in their box . Jeff

Do you have all three bolt on modules for the $299 a month or a smaller package ?
-
Thank you Tom . I am looking for something a little more specific though . Someone who has had great success with converting specifically for auto repair customers . I enjoy reading your posts Tom . Thank you !
