  • When the Diagnostic Tech Becomes Extinct

Within five years, the diagnostic tech may join the radiator repair guys and the in-shop carburetor rebuilders. The new king of the hill will be “Mr. R and R.” The guy who can replace anything in 25% to 50% of the book time every time, assuming he is supplied with the necessary resources. What a different world is on the horizon.

There will still be a need for diagnostic technicians to tell the R&R monkeys what to replace. The diagnostic tech will need to evolve to keep up with current technology just as technicians have for the last 100 years. How we pay our diagnostic techs will also need to change so we can keep them in the industry and not lose them to manufacturing or other industries where their skill sets can make them more money with less stress.
