Total vehicle miles driven impact vehicle operating costs
The more miles a vehicle travels, the higher the cost of operating the vehicle. Operational costs include fuel and general maintenance and repairs performed on the vehicle. Depending upon the year of the vehicle and the type of vehicle, fuel consumption and general maintenance and repair costs can vary.
Fuel costs can vary by as much as 60% when you compare economy-type vehicles to low mile per gallon SUVs. Depending upon the year of a vehicle, general maintenance and repair services can vary too due to general wear and tear on motor vehicle components. As miles accumulate, especially with older vehicles, parts breakdown or deteriorate. Vehicle components impacted can include filters (engine, cabin), various pumps (fuel, water), belts (serpentine), suspension components (shocks, struts, ball joints, wheel bearings, etc.), brake system components (pads, shoes, rotors, calipers), electrical components (engine sensors, battery, alternator, spark plugs, lights), any system that uses fluids (engine, transmission / drivetrain), wiper blades and of course tires.
