  • Shop Owners Group – Do you charge dues?

Posted by joecval on October 22, 2012 at 3:11 pm

If you belong to a Shop Owners Group where you meet on a regular basis and discuss your business with other shop owners do you charge one another dues? The reason I ask is it was suggested that you should charge dues because that way you can be considered an association and avoid any “price-fixing” accusations. I will ask my attorney but just wondering what everyone else does.

    Thanks!

Not sure about that aspect, however your group is likely to do better in

the long run with some type of dues primarily to compensate one

    individual to facilitate.

Schedules, agendas, topics, the role of border collie, etc.

Volunteerism will wear thin after a while in most cases. If someone is

“paid” they are obligated to always take care of certain things.

    Hi Joe,

You might consider displaying a poster at your meetings that says something to the fact that it is illegal to talk about specific prices and shop labor rates. Pointing this out before your meeting starts should be a formality.
