  • Why Your Shop is a “Ghost” to ChatGPT (And How to Fix It)

I’ve noticed that something is shifting with how people search for local businesses — and it’s happening faster than most of us expected. More and more customers are skipping Google and going straight to ChatGPT or Gemini when they need a mechanic, a body shop, or a detailer. They’re typing things like “best honest mechanic near me” or “who do locals trust for brakes in nameyourtown” and just going with whoever AI recommends. No scrolling, no comparing reviews — just a name and an address.

That’s why I’ve been spending more time lately looking at how these AI platforms actually respond to those searches. And what I found surprised me.

Most of us think if we have 500+ Google reviews and a solid website, we’re covered. But there’s a trap that’s quietly handing your local customers to Midas and Firestone on a silver platter — and most shop owners have no idea it’s happening.

AI is obsessed with consistency. When someone asks ChatGPT for a mechanic, it’s cross-referencing your name, address, and phone number across dozens of platforms looking for everything to match. If it does, it recommends you confidently. If something’s off — even something small — it doesn’t risk it. It defaults to the big national chains because their data is identical everywhere.

I ran an audit on my local shop here in Virginia. Great place — 4.8 stars, over 500 reviews, been in the community for years. They were showing up in less than 5% of AI searches in their own market. The local Midas was being recommended 88 times across the same searches. The culprit? Their shop name appeared slightly different across three platforms. To a person, that’s nothing. To an AI verifying identity, that’s a red flag.

The fix is almost embarrassingly simple. Pick one version of your name and use it everywhere — your Google Business Profile, your website, Yelp, RepairPal, every directory you’re listed in. Down to “Street” vs “St.” Same phone number format every time. Same address, no exceptions.

It’s a boring fix. But in 2026 it’s the difference between being the first name AI recommends or not showing up at all while Midas gets the call.

Your reviews built your reputation. Don’t let a sloppy listing hide it.
